Increase the occupancy rate of Hotels with high quality amenities

The hotel industry in Malaysia is growing by leaps and bounds due in large part to the increase in the number of people traveling frequently due to business or personal reasons. The budget of every traveller varies depending on the preferences and the comfort level expected. The selection of any hotel by a traveller is based on two factors which are budget and the amenities offered.

Increase the competitiveness of hotel

Competition is high within the Hotel Industry. Hotels are offering unique and attractive amenities to the travellers staying with them. The hotels and resorts need to offer high quality facilities and amenities to the customers in order to maintain high occupancy rates throughout the year. The hotel amenities include premises of the hotel, toiletries like soap, shampoo, cream, etc. These basic amenities help to arrange a comfortable stay for the guests and give them a home like feeling.

You can attract more customers by offering them high quality, lower priced amenities. The basic supply of our amenities like small size lodging bar soaps and amenity size liquids such as shampoo, conditioner, and moisturizing lotions will provide the ultimate convenience to your customers.

Provide important benchmarks for hotels

As hotel operator consider tweaking their offerings and allocating labour for better guest satisfaction, the study provides intelligence for meeting and event planners as they consider future host properties. For instance, post-event surveys that address amenity usage would inform planners about which amenities would improve the attendee experience at future events. With such detail, planners can negotiate a reduced focus on less-desirable amenities during the event while seeking reduced cost or greater labour allocation for more-desirable amenities.

You can have an edge over the competitors by selecting Ventino Malaysia’s room amenities, an excellent supplier of high quality amenities in Malaysia.

Grow your hotel business in Malaysia with the Hotel Mini Bar

Grow your hotel business in Malaysia with the Hotel Mini Bar

Mini bars are a great way for a hotel to earn extra revenue, and which hotel doesn’t like to earn more money? But on the flip side, it does involve additional work and time which many small and mid-sized hotels may not have. You need people to stock the mini bar, manage inventory, report the consumption to front desk and so on.

Due to these reasons, nowadays many hotels are doing away with the minibar in the rooms. However, I believe that a mini bar is a great source of extra revenue for all hotels especially those that don’t have 24 hours room service. It’s just that hotels need to think of ways in which they can outsource the service, implement a reliable system, as well as cater to the changing tastes of their clientele. It’s time for hotels to be innovative and think of ideas through which they can entice the guests to use the mini bars.

Once the excitement of the products available in the mini bar is created, then it ensures more and more people are attracted to it. Perfect examples are children – most kids generally run and check what the mini bar in their room stocks. It’s their perfect dream to have direct access to chips, chocolates, nuts and more. Hotels need to create the same kind of excitement for the older guests.

One step for the hotel could be to outsource the mini bar in Malaysia. There are now companies across the globe that provide mini bar services to hotels. The system allows hotels to reduce its staffing levels, shrinkage or losses and guest disputes at the front desk. Thanks to the automatic billing system, hotels have witnessed the average loss percentage is reduced to an average of 2% instead of the 20%-40% incurred with simple manual minibars. The system also provides reports on which items need to be replaced in which room, thereby saving a lot of time for the housekeeping staff. They don’t have to go room to room checking the mini bar on a daily basis.

Hotels sometimes just need to think out-of-the-box before they plan to do away with certain ideas. By providing interesting mini bar options and outsourcing their mini bar services, hotels can profit from the extra revenue generated with the mini bar and do away with the hurdles that hinder it.

Basic Hotel Amenities Every Hotel Room Should Have

Dear Hoteliers! Let’s go back to the basics and learn about Basic Amenities Every Hotel Room Should Have.

Emergency/Exit Plans

Custom designed in-room exit maps are created to enhance the ambiance of each guest room and to ensure the safe evacuation of each hotel guest.

Tea/Coffee Making Machine

Tea Coffee sachets are the ideal and important room amenities for hotel bedrooms. This allows the guest the liberty to serve himself/herself without having to pick up the phone at odd hours.

Hotel Toiletries

At the least any and every hotel should provide shampoo, conditioner and body wash as an in-room amenity. It is likely for a guest to carry their own dental kit but when it comes to save ourselves from the extra baggage at the airport we all decide to let go of the three mentioned above – expecting it to be laid out in our hotel room bathroom!

City Guide

Leisure travellers plan their trip in advance and come ready with an itinerary but it is for the business travellers that every room should have a city guide. What if they find time in between their meeting? Or maybe their trip gets extended? Maybe they‘ll decide to pick it up and go sightseeing! And don’t we all secretly wish for our guests not to in-room to avoid the IRD or Concierge requests?

Digital Safe

A safe will help keep the guest’s valuables safe which in turn will help you keep your job safe! Without wasting more time on the importance of that steel/metal box – JUST GET ONE!!

Laundry

All of us need clean clothes to wear on a daily basis. Unless you’re from the Flintstones Era. Providing a laundry bag in the room will definitely make your guest’s life easier and stay comfortable!

Stationery

Yes we live in the tech savvy age but we almost forget that when we have our boss on call and are running around to find a pen and paper to jot down everything he says! Hence, the importance of stationary. It comes handy for a guest even when they are bored and would like to turn to writing or drawing.

Hotel Towels

Even though everyone likes to steal them, you still have to keep them. This amenity is necessary. A hotel is not a hotel without towels.

Room signage

Guests can place a Do Not Disturb sign on the door in order to inform hotel staff that you respect their privacy

Internet

If you’re not in the wilderness, you absolutely must offer an internet connection to your guests, ideally for free. This could be in the form of wi-fi (most common and preferred) or a LAN cable.

Make Your Hotel More Family Friendly

Make Your Hotel More Family Friendly
Whether you own a hotel, Airbnb or another company in Malaysia, there are many ways to attract guests. Focusing on the family may not be the first thing, but this often overlooked aspect may be the secret weapon to keep more customers with you instead of your competitors. So how do you achieve this goal?

Give them ideas
Living in a hotel with young children can be very busy without having to plan an itinerary. By providing families with not only things that they can enjoy collectively, but also instructions for carrying out these activities, this makes their vacation easier and more interesting. Arrange event locations from near to far, and estimate how long it will take to walk or drive there.

Packaging is everything
No matter how old your children live with you, one thing is certain: the easier it is for them to enjoy life, the better. So, why not provide them with family packages that include everything they need?
Target high-budget families by providing luxury vacation packages, so that children have a lot of things to do so that parents can relax. Low-budget families will enjoy packages that include discounts on dining and accommodation, as well as many free benefits to make their vacation unforgettable.

Think like a child
Another way to ensure that family members return to your home again and again is to consider what the child might want. The kids' menu is always a good idea; it includes many healthy choices approved by parents. Consider offering a special welcome package for children. You can include everything from cars and colouring books to T-shirts and teddy bears, and all items can carry logos.

Help new parents
The younger your child’s guests, the greater the challenge for parents to travel with them. Ironically, however, it is the new parents who need the holiday the most! A hotel that provides cribs and services can meet the needs of parents of children under three years of age, which can reassure them that they will be able to get everything they need from you, which can actually help them relax and enjoy the journey Time.

Even providing bottled heating as part of room service can make it easier for new parents to have stayed in hotels with new born babies. Baby-friendly items such as folding cribs and playpens, or eating baby food and bibs in your restaurant, will definitely make their lives easier.

The best family vacation is a time to spend quality time and make good memories. The high-quality hotel amenities we provide make every family feel relaxed and cost-effective. Visit us to find out why we are still the preferred hotel amenities supplier in the hospitality industry in Malaysia.

9 Steps to open a hotel business in Malaysia

IF YOU ARE OPENING A HOTEL, THERE ARE SEVERAL THINGS THAT YOU MUST BE CAREFUL ABOUT. FIRST AND FOREMOST, YOU NEED TO KEEP UP WITH THE NEW HOTEL INDUSTRY TRENDS.

Do you know the necessary steps to open a hotel business? If you are opening a hotel, there are several things that you must be careful about. First and foremost, you need to keep up with the new hotel industry trends. The truth is that opening a new hotel is challenging, as there are many things you need to take care of.

One of the most demanding phases is the pre-opening of the hotel. When you hire an expert hotel consultant, you will have the help you need to choose an efficient prioritization strategy to design a hotel opening plan.

There are many factors, such as marketing and distribution that you need to plan during the pre-opening phase. Keep in mind that in each step of the plan, you can encounter many obstacles as well.

SO, WHAT IS A HOTEL?
A hotel is a commercial property where travelers who need room to spend the night pay a fee to stay there. Last year, the hotel industry generated under $200 billion in revenue. There are four main things you need to consider before attempting to open a hotel:

  • You have the capital or access to financing
  • You have limited hotel experience
  • You have realistic expectations. You know opening a hotel is not a rich-quick scheme.
  • If this is your first hotel and you don’t have real estate development experience, your best option is to acquire an existing hotel.

GET A HOTEL CONSULTANT
If you are inexperienced with the hotel industry, the wiser decision you can make is to hire a professional hotel consultant that can give you the expertise to build a reliable business.

“A hotel consultant will take care of everything that needs to be done to open the hotel.”

Having a professional team by your side with outstanding experience in operations, marketing, and financing could increase your ROI and revenue from the beginning. To open a hotel, you must follow nine steps.

1. MAKE YOUR BUSINESS PLAN
The first step is to develop your business plan. Your business plan should describe how you are going to achieve your goals. Business plans are not only essential to attract investment but also to keep you on track moving forward. Even though no two business plans are the same, they all cover the same areas, including:

  • Products and services. Here, you will describe the products and services your hotel will offer. Don’t forget to include:
    • Prices
    • Benefits to the consumer

  • Market analysis. This part will talk about the competition, including:
    • Strengths
    • Weaknesses

  • Marketing strategy. This area explains how your hotel will attract and keep its customer. You need to describe a straightforward distribution channel.

  • Financial planning. This part is crucial as it where you include all your financial statements, balance sheets, and other vital financial information. You should include your goals for the first few years. The idea is to attract investors and lenders.

  • Budget. Any new business needs to have a budget. It should include:
    • Staff
    • Development
    • Manufacturing
    • Marketing
    • Any other expenses related to the business

2. COSTS
If you are considering opening a hotel, you should know that the costs to get started can be considerable. Some of the most expensive costs include:

  • Land
  • Equipment
  • Furniture
  • Licences and Permits
So you should expect a meaningful investment to get started. It is challenging to give an industry average since the costs range extensively on the price of the property and the type of construction you preferred.

Besides the opening costs, you should consider the ongoing expenses for a hotel business. These costs include:

  • Facility maintenance
  • Salaries
  • Advertising
  • Insurance
  • Office supplies
  • Utilities
  • High-speed internet
  • Cable TV
Besides, you should expect to spend hundreds of dollars per month, replacing beds, furniture, mattresses, shower curtains, carpets, etc. How much money you pay will depend on the number of rooms your hotel has and the quality.

It is essential to establish an FF&E Reserve. An FF&E Reserve is a replacement fund that should be set aside for the periodic replacement of hotel components, like furniture, fittings, and equipment that wear out quicker than the hotel.

Establishing this fund can be challenging, as it is hard to calculate how much you will need. The good news is that IHCS Consulting Service can help you set the right amount for your needs.

“Remember, a successful hotel project should include both FF&E and OS&E.”

Another high cost is staff salaries and wages. Employees can earn between:

  • Low-level employees – RM2000++ per month
  • Hotel professionals such as manager, accountant, marketing professionals – RM 12,000++ per month
  • Maintenance team – RM4280 per month
For office supplies, you can budget RM200 to RM400 per month, and the cost of high-speed internet and TV cables throughout the hotel is about RM600 to RM1200 per month.

3. TARGET MARKET
The main job of a hotel is to offer a room to spend the night to any person looking for one. It doesn’t matter if the person is coming from overseas or across the street.

However, to run a successful hotel business, you need to create your target demographic customer. Once you know who your target customer is, you will know which amenities to include and the hotel’s location.

4. PRICE
As an entrepreneur, you might be wondering, “How does a hotel business make money?”  The answer is simple; with the profits of the hotel. An excellent strategy is to pay yourself an amount per year and then invest your earnings into the property.

How much you can charge will depend on the type of hotel you have. Keep in mind that the average price for a hotel room is around RM170 a room. Your price strategy should be based on demand.

“During the high season (holidays and summer), the hotel room can increase, so always set your prices on what people are willing to pay.”

Creating a price strategy to increase revenue can be challenging. You should consult IHCS Consulting Service as they have the expertise to help you run a successful business.

If you want to make your venture more cost-effective, consider expanding, and even creating a franchise. Hotel consultant can help you succeed in a competitive industry, so contact them if you want to increase your earnings and grow your business.

5. BUSINESS NAME
Choosing the right name for your hotel is critical. Recommends you to follow these rules:

  • Pick a name that is meaningful to your hotel
  • Try not to change your hotel name once you open. Remember, your hotel name could give you a competitive edge over similar hotels in your area
  • Avoid Long Names
It is a wiser strategy to choose a business name that is available as a web domain, as you will need to promote your hotel online to be successful.

6. ESTABLISHING A LEGAL BUSINESS ENTITY
One of the first steps to open a hotel is to establish a legal business entity such as an LLC. A limited liability company (LLC) is a business form that can protect you from being personally liable for your hotel debts or liabilities. Other business structures include sole proprietorship, partnership, and corporation.

Before you establish a business structure, make sure to talk with a hotel consultant as each structure has different tax, income, and liability implications for business owners.

7. PERMITS AND LICENCES
Before you can open your hotel, you will need to obtain the necessary permits and licences. If you fail to obey, it can result in substantial fines, or even cause your hotel to be closed.

IHCS Consulting Services works worldwide, so make sure to consult them as they know what types of permits and licences are required in your country.

8. HOTEL INSURANCE
This is one of the key steps to open a hotel business. Whether you are running a 5-star hotel or bed and breakfast, your hotel business is not exempt from risks. It is crucial to protect your business and guests with hotel insurance.

You have to keep in mind that the hospitality industry faces high profile lawsuits each year. Protect yourself and your business with a proper insurance policy.

9. CREATE YOUR WEB STRATEGY
If you want your hotel business to be successful, you need to create your web strategy. You need to build your website and have a presence on major social media platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, Pinterest, LinkedIn, and Twitter.

Having an online strategy is vital to promote and market your business and to keep customers coming back. Besides, it will help you define a strong brand, which is key to be profitable.

Hospitality Trends for 2021: Smart Hotel in Malaysia

Hospitality Trends for 2021: Smart Hotel in Malaysia
Be an outstanding smart hotel in Malaysia
Just as we bid farewell a decade before entering the next decade, hotels will need to be prepared to bring their property and guest experience into the next decade. In the smart hotel industry in 2021 and beyond, some of the main trends that we will begin to see include the following influencers.

Main trends from the smart hotel system
1. Millennials
Millennials can be a demanding group of people. They are used to obtain information quickly and easily without having to stand in line to do so. They include technology, mobile devices, social media and applications. The smart hotel will need to adjust and provide mobile check-in/check-out and provide an app.
In addition, they will want to use mobile devices to meet the needs of millennial customers, such as whether they need turn-down service, need more towels, etc. Smart hotels also need to provide special treatments such as affordable food and wine tasting sessions.

2. Artificial Intelligence
AI (Artificial Intelligence) is another emerging technology that smart hotels hope to incorporate their guest experience. They can place personal assistant devices such as Alexa or Google Assistant in each smart room. Guests can use a personal assistant to request Uber, buy event tickets or order room service from the hotel.

3. Green Sustainability
Being more environmentally conscious will be a big trend in 2021 and beyond for hospitality businesses, including hotels in Malaysia. Adding solar panels to roofs and on-demand water heaters are two upgrades smart hotels will start to incorporate into their properties. They should also continue to use energy-efficient lighting and water-conserving fixtures.

4. Technology
Hotels need to adopt emerging technologies. The Internet of Things (IoT) is a technology, and we will start to see more use of it in the smart hotel and hospitality industry. From allowing guests to connect to the refrigerator in the room and store food and beverages for them, to using mobile devices as room keys and pool and spa passes, the Internet of Things will change the rules of the game.
Both VR (virtual reality) and facial recognition will become more and more common in smart hotels. Some larger hotels are already using VR as a way to interact with guests. For example, they can immerse guests in a VR experience, where they can visit the hotel and view rooms and on-site facilities.
Facial recognition is being used in different ways for different visitor experiences. One way hotels can use it is that after guests register and check in, they will be able to scan their faces with their mobile devices and send them to IoT devices that unlock their room doors. They don't need a key, they just walk to the door and press a button to scan their face, and the door will unlock.

5. Increased Use of Social Media
Expect hotels to take things to the next level like providing real-time offers for guests staying on a property. Smart hotels will also use their social media channels to announce new technologies being added to their properties and using guests’ images and feedback for continued self-promotion.

To ensure your hotel guests are happy and loyal, you should be thinking about updating your property for 2021 and beyond. It’s time to make your hotel smart in Malaysia. Please contact us immediately to get a free customized quote.

It is true that open a keyed lock is not a tough task for the thefts because they are often made of low quality materials, making them easily broken by burglar, which can take an unprecedented amount of damage. However, almost all of the digital locks that use fingerprints, Wi-Fi or Bluetooth and tend to prevent the out of power, the user can use a backup key to unlock their door too.

Forced house breaking is a major risk that comes with traditional keyed locks, but it is also possible although a person has a digital door lock installed in their house door. However, a person can decrease the risk of forced house breaking substantially by simply reinforcing their door with digital lock that are made of heavy-duty metal.

How Do Smart Locks Work?

There are a lot of great smart devices out there that would be cool to have. And then there are devices that will make you wonder how you ever lived without them.

Smart locks are at the top of that list. With a smart lock, you can ditch your keys and enjoy the safety and convenience of managing your lock wherever you are.

Take a look at how a smart lock works and some of the benefits they provide over a traditional door lock.

What are smart locks and how do they work?

Smart locks are keyless door locks that allow you to open your door without a physical key. They can be controlled remotely using a smartphone app. Many models feature a numeric keypad on the lock for entering a unique access code.

A smart lock connects to your home's WiFi network, which allows it to receive the code or smartphone command to lock or unlock.

While some smart locks require you to completely replace your entire lock system, others fit right over your existing lock system or only require a few modifications.

When smart locks are integrated into a complete smart home, they can also integrate with other devices, like a smart speaker or your security system. However, they need to be connected to a smart home hub that enables all the devices to work together.

Do you really need a smart lock?

Your house key locks and unlocks your front door. That's it. But if you're looking for something more than bare bones basic functionality, then a smart lock is the way to go. Some of the ways smart locks make life easier (and your home safer) include:

  • Control your front door no matter where you are.
With a smart lock, your smartphone doubles as your key. There’s no need to rush home to beat your guests or a delivery driver to the door; simply log onto your app and unlock your front door from wherever you are.

  • Codes over keys.
If you’ve ever stood at your front door while digging through your bag to find your keys, you’ll appreciate the keyless functionality that lets you unlock your door with a simple code—no key required.

  • No more hide-a-keys.
Smart locks eliminate the need for making copies of your key for everyone. This is also much safer than having multiple copies of your house key floating around, protecting your home from potential burglaries.

  • Notifications help you remember to lock up.
If you’ve ever left your house in a rush to make it to work or drop off your kids on time, you know the worried feeling that comes with wondering whether or not you remembered to lock your door on the way out. Many smart locks will send you notifications on your phone if you forgot to lock your door, so you can quickly lock it with the tap of a button.

Smart locks as part of an integrated smart home

A smart lock integrated into a smart home system makes life easier in a number of ways:

  • Know who's coming or going.
You can make up to 30 unique access codes for everyone who needs to get into your house, from the babysitter to dog sitter to your own kids. Your system keeps a log of which code was used and when, so you know exactly who is coming and going. You can also receive notifications on your smartphone when a code is used.

  • Create guest codes for visitors.
Preparing for out-of-town visitors can be stressful enough without having to run and get a copy of your key made or coordinate your schedules so you're home when they arrive. Just make a temporary access code for your guests so they can come and go as they please. Then, when they leave, you can delete the code.

  • Create custom rules.
You can also create custom rules for your smart lock, such as locking doors automatically after a certain amount of time, or arming your security system and turning off your lights when you lock your front door.

  • Lock your door with the sound of your voice.
Want to make sure your door is locked, but your smartphone is charging in another room? No problem, when your smart lock is integrated with a system that includes a Google Home or Amazon Echo. Just say, ''Hey Google, lock the front door.'' It's that simple.

  • Leave with one touch
If your morning rush includes juggling kids, book bags, keys, your wallet, and more, you'd probably welcome anything that makes getting out the door easier. With a smart home system, one-touch leaving locks your door, arms your security system, turns off the lights, and adjusts the thermostat to save energy—all with the simple touch of the lock button.

  • Arm your security system at night easily
You don't need to make the rounds to get your house night time ready by checking locks or going from room to room to turn the lights off. You can rest easy knowing that once you arm your system, your doors lock, your lights turn off, and your temperature adjusts automatically—all thanks to the custom actions of your integrated system. It's as simple as the touch of a button or a voice command.

Some smart locks are simple to install, but others can turn into a complicated project, depending on your comfort level with hardware and technology.

The Advantages of Using a Keypad Lock System

The main purpose of a door lock is to keep a facility or property secure. If you’re considering installing a keypad lock, you will want to get informed about their benefits in commercial and residential settings.
Padlock for door is one of the best ways to go keyless and safeguard a property. Often, keypad lock operates in connection with access control systems. Learn more about how keypad locks work and their advantages.

How Keypad Lock Works

Instead of a key, this type of electronic door locks requires a numerical code to grant entry to a facility or property. The code is punched in by users via a numerical pad, similar to those on a basic calculator. If the correct code is entered, the door lock or deadbolt should release. Some mechanisms require batteries or a small electrical current in order to unlock.

Some keypad locks have an integrated security feature that keeps the door locked for a set amount of time (usually 10 to 15 minutes) after several incorrect attempts to enter the code.

Benefits of Keypad Locks

There are many benefits to choosing the best pad lock over conventional locking mechanisms.

  1. Convenience of a Keypad Lock

The biggest advantage is convenience. It eliminates the necessity of keys. There’s no need to carry them around, keep track of copies and spares, or change the door lock when a key is stolen or misplaced. Children, guests and service providers can be given their own code or a temporary code, rather than a key.

  1. Higher Security

Keypad lock has a different hardware design than other types of locks. They don’t have cylinder mechanisms, so they essentially cannot be picked or bumped like conventional locks. This keeps the building more secure.
Instead of risking losing keys and having to rekey or change out the lock. With a keypad lock system, it’s easy to change the security pin code whenever necessary.

  1. Enhanced Durability

Traditional keys and locks wear down over time; it becomes more difficult to get it to turn and function properly. Padlock for door is much more durable than conventional locks. A high-quality keypad door lock should last longer with standard hardware.

  1. Easy Digital Door Lock Installation

Many property owners in Malaysia think that if they want to install a keypad lock, they’ll have to make major adjustments to door or frames. That’s not true. In most cases, padlock for door can be easily installed on standard doors, just like any standard lock. Mechanical and battery-powered keypad locks are available which don’t require connection to a power source.

  1. Integration with Access Control Systems

Keypad lock systems can be used as part of an access control system. This allows companies to restrict entry permission, even when using a correct code, during certain hours of the day or night. Businesses can also place a keypad entry system within the interior of a building. This restricts access to certain parts of the facility. It’s handy for business owners who want to limit employee access to certain parts of an office complex during certain times of the day. Keypad lock is the best electronic door locks for their choice.

Based on the above benefits, you can see why keypad lock have become increasingly popular for residential and commercial applications. However, one thing that is worth nothing about keypad lock systems is that they’re generally more expensive than conventional locks. The cost of keypad lock is high.

What is Fingerprint Door Lock? How Do They Work?

Security has always been a concern of paramount importance to human beings. We have gone from protecting valuables in the past by keeping them in dungeons to safeguarding data by layers and layers of cryptographic software. Either way, ensuring the well-being of our personal belongings has always been near the top of our priority list.

Thanks to technology, today security involves a wide range of software and hardware including web-based security services, biometrics and personal devices with integrated security levels. One of the biggest advances of the digital-technical age has been the introduction of biometrics into security.

Here, we shall take a look at fingerprint door lock, one of the earliest and most used systems deploying biometrics, and take an in-depth look at its workings.

What is fingerprint door lock?

Let’s start with the definition. Although the name in itself is pretty self-explanatory, a fingerprint lock may be defined as “a system which grants access to authorized personnel by virtue of recognizing their unique fingerprints.” You have probably looked at your hands countless times and noticed the ridges and valley pattern. The patterns were an important outcome of the human evolution as they enhanced our ability to grip. However, an unforeseen consequence of this particular step in the evolutionary process was to grant humans a fantastic method of identification.

Fingerprint Door Lock

Human fingerprints are extremely detailed and nearly unique. What is more, they are also very difficult to fake or alter and can endure over an individual’s lifespan. This makes them very suitable as long-term markers of human identity. When the technology which can recognize and differentiate between fingerprints is deployed in securing access to a door way, you get a “Fingerprint Door Lock System”.

However, a question which arises is that why should you not stick to the old door lock and key? Or use some other alternative methods instead of going for the relatively expensive electronic door lock systems. Well, not only are fingerprint door lock systems reliable and non-intrusive, there is also no danger of leaving your fingers at home or at office. Also, the fact that fingerprints are nearly always unique, makes fingerprint door locking system perfect with regards to security. And of course, you can hardly forget your fingerprints or even guess it, as is the case with an alphanumeric password. Thus, fingerprint locks can be said is the best electronic door locks for you.

How do fingerprint door locks work?

Okay, so let’s get down to how these door locks actually work. Basically, fingerprint locks operated by scanning and converting your fingerprint data into a numerical template.

Once you place your finger onto the scanner for the first time the conversion into numerical data takes place, and the fingerprint template is saved. This process is then repeated every time you want to grant someone access. The next time someone places his/her finger on the sensor, it matches the data obtained through the finger with the pre-saved values. If a match is found, access is granted and the door opens. On the other hand, if its someone else trying to get through, access is not allowed and the door remains locked. Simple, no?

Now, matching the algorithm is the most important process here. This is usually achieved by the Minutia matching process. In this, several minutia points are located on your finger’s pads, along with their position and direction when you register for the first time. This information is stored in the memory. While matching, the already stored fingerprint template is compared to the received input. If there is a match, a green LED usually signals it and the door is opened. The process is very quick and is completed in a fraction of a second. In case you are wondering, two instances of friction ridge skin impressions together constitute a minutia.

Disadvantages associated with fingerprint door lock systems

Fingerprint based systems while very useful do however have some disadvantages. And ironically enough, many of them stem from the system’s very virtues. While they are very, very hard to fool, it is not impossible. Scanners that use optical systems to obtain information can sometimes be fooled by an image of the finger. On the other hand, a person can get around capacitor-based scanners by using a mold. These situations are avoided by using pulse and heat detectors also called live finger detection.

Another major issue with fingerprint door locks is that if someone does manage to create a copy/mold/image of your hand that can open doors, well, you are in deep trouble. Since you can’t really reset fingerprints the way you can with a normal password, it will mean either replacing locks or using a combination of pin and fingerprints.

Also, sometimes the scanner may refuse to recognize your finger in case of scarring or cuts or abrasions. Power cuts, battery discharge are other common issues associated with these door locking systems, which have the potential to leave you stranded outside your workplace or office. They are forestalled by integrating a mechanical system, where you can use a key to unlock the door in case of such a failure.

Advantages over other biometric systems

There are certainly other biometric systems as well that incorporate many of the advantages associated with fingerprint locking systems. For example, iris scanning plugs the slight potential for security breaches left by fingerprint-based systems. Voice based authentication on the other hand, lets you just speak to open the door without even requiring you to place your finger on it.

However, iris scanners are very expensive as compared to fingerprint door lock systems and many people may find the experience of getting their eyes scanned, uncomfortable. While it appears perfect for high security government installations, fingerprint door lock systems are much more affordable and comfortable when it is out homes or offices that are being talked about.

Similarly, despite all its advantages, voice based biometric door opening systems have a very serious flaw. The rate of failure is very high. You may have a hoarse throat or a cold and the door will remain unyielding before you, refusing to recognize your voice.

What to look for in fingerprint door locks?

Now that you know all about fingerprint door locks, you may be itching to get one and install it at your home or office. There are just a couple of things that you should keep in mind while getting a fingerprint lock system installed.

First of all, make sure that it has a keypad or a mechanical key slot. This will make sure that in case the electronic door lock is unable to recognize your fingerprints for some reasons, say a cut or even a power failure, you have an alternative way to get in.

Make sure that you check the FRR (False Rejection Rate) as well as you don’t want to purchase one with a high FRR. Also, locks made of tough brass or steel are recommended over aluminium since they cannot be broken using a crowbar and back the intelligence of the fingerprint scanner system with their sturdiness and strength.

Checking what power the system is also a good idea. There are a whole range of systems available that may draw their power from batteries or that could be connected to your main power supply.

Also take a look at the number of fingerprints that can be stored — or in other words, the number of people that can be granted access at once. This is particularly important when you are using the system to secure the doors at your offices and require a lot of people to be able to go in and out.

Conclusion
Fingerprint locks are pretty awesome. Secure, affordable, non-intrusive and almost fail safe, these systems don’t require you to carry a key or remember a password. You can also grant access to as many people as you want and remove their access at your pleasure. In short, whether it’s your home that you want to protect or your office, definitely consider getting a fingerprint door lock installed; it is very likely to prove to be worth your money.

10 features to consider before buying a smart door lock

Battery life

The majority of smart locks operate on either multiple AA alkaline batteries or a rechargeable lithium-ion cell. Whatever type of battery your smart door lock uses, you’ll still get an alert on your app when battery power gets low. Moreover, the housing mounted on the inside of your door will often include an LED that will flash red when the battery needs to be replaced or recharged. How long do these batteries normally last? Well, it all depends on the smart door lock and its functions. Many companies rate their battery life in terms of the number of “cycles” — that is, the total number of physical locks and unlocks — and power usually lasts anywhere from three months to a year, depending on the type of lock and the functions it performs.

Alternate unlocking way

Bluetooth and Wi-Fi may be great, but they are none the less occasionally unreliable. Even technology companies whose job it is to manufacture smart door locks are aware of this potential problem. So, they’ve come up with alternative ways for locking/unlocking smart door locks. As well as wireless unlocking techniques, more and more practical smart locks now offer alternative physical or electronic entry options, including PIN codes (sometimes with an add-on keypad, also Bluetooth-connected) and/or a physical key. A small number of smart door lock suppliers also offer a key fob to wirelessly unlock a door if you don’t have your smartphone with you.

Auto lock/unlock

Bluetooth enabled door locks usually provide keyless or PIN-less entry. When you’re carrying your smartphone, a smart door lock — particularly a retrofit lock — may let you auto-unlock your door when you are a prescribed distance away, and auto-lock behind you after a user-prescribed period of time.  However, this prescribed distance is usually limited to around 30 feet, and it has to be remembered that you can only carry out this function from outside the property. A best smart door locks with keypads generally won’t include proximity auto-unlock capabilities for sound security reasons, like preventing an intruder or thief from entering a property using a lost or stolen phone.

Guest keys

Smart door locks, particularly retrofit models, let you assign “keys” for visitors who you’re happy to let into your home in your absence: visitors like out-of-town friends or family members, service workers or delivery people, or neighbours watering the plants, taking in the mail or or feeding the cat while you’re away. You may have come across this particular practice if you’ve ever stayed in an Airbnb property.  Entry ‘keys’ are sent via a text or email code through the smart door lock app, and these keys give your visitor wireless entry capabilities for a prescribed period of time or a prescribed number of entries. Replacement smart locks with keypads allow you to simply assign temporary passwords, timed for single use or for a specific number of hours or days. Most smart door locks also track who comes and goes, and smart locks with Wi-Fi can send an alert to your phone when someone comes or goes, so even when you’re still at work you’ll be able to find out whether the kids have returned home from their schools.

Weatherproof rating

Smart door locks are complicated pieces of kit, housing not just the traditional metal pins, tumblers, gears and other standard lock mechanics, but also sensitive electronics. Thus they need to be able to withstand extremes in weather conditions to function properly. Complete replacement smart door locks will indicate what temperatures the door lock is designed to withstand and often have an IP water/dust-proof rating. However, not all smart locks are born equal: not all can withstand adverse weather conditions over a prolonged period. If you want to ensure that your smart lock is up to the job, no matter what the weather throws at it, then only buy from a reputable lock manufacturer with a long and proven track record of testing for such conditions.

ANSI lock quality

Most physical door locks will have their own distinct specifications and idiosyncrasies; so it’s difficult to establish whether the smart lock you’re considering buying will be up to the job. In order to make that choice a little easier, 3 standard lock designations have been introduced by the ANSI/BHMA (American national Standards Institute/ Builders’ Hardware Manufacturers Association). These designation tests judge locks on their robustness and security against picking, bumping, other physical attacks along with the longevity of the locking/unlocking mechanism. The 3 designation grades are:

Grade 1
The strongest grade, usually reserved for commercial applications

Grade 2
The most common residential lock, and most commonly bought ANSI-approved lock

Grade 3
Usually a secondary lock to supplement a grade 1 or 2 lock.

Wireless security

Security is always a concern, especially when you constantly hear and read about hacking attacks. That concern is no different for Wi-Fi security. Most smrt door lock manufactures will publish the technical specification of their locks and tell you just how secure their W-Fi security is, but it should be remembered that there is no ‘best’ wireless security scheme or standard for smart door locks. The best smart lock you can hope to discover is just how high a priority the smart door lock manufacturer places on the issue. The only way you’ll discover that, unfortunately, is through extensive research. What can be said with some sort of conviction, however, is that the best keylss door lock – that is the most hack-proof – are keypad-enabled models that don’t use Bluetooth or Wi-Fi as their primary entry method.

Smart home compatibility

Most smart door locks can be integrated into an existing smart home environment — using Amazon Alexa, Google Home, Apple HomeKit, IFTTT (If This Then That), Z-Wave, ZigBee, Samsung SmartThings — so it’s easy enough to incorporate the locking of doors, turning on lights and adjusting temperature controls into your smart routine. However, as things currently stand, very few smart door locks are compatible with all smart home technologies.

Voice control

An increasing number of smart door locks that are compatible with Amazon and HomeKit also provide Alexa and Siri voice control. However, this voice control capability is usually limited to locking the door when you’re inside your home. Amazon recently approved an unlock voice control protocol which requires the user to provide a spoken password after a spoken unlock command. A growing number of lock makers are also just beginning to implement this new Alexa Key “speak to unlock” feature.

Fit and finish

Traditional door lock vendors with a vaulted pedigree offer a wide variety of smart door lock hardware finishes and trims and matching latch mechanisms, including variations of silver, bronze, brass and black. Newer tech-focused smart lock providers, however, do not offer such choices. Hence if aesthetics is important to you, your digital door lock purchase options are limited.

Types of Digital Door Locks

Types of Digital Door Locks
Types of digital door lock
Every business is unique, which means that the type of digital lock you choose will depend on your business's own needs and each lock's capabilities.
Many door locks, regardless of its type, offer multiple keyless ways to unlock the door in the event of a lost key or forgotten code.

Keypad door locks
A keypad door lock model requires a PIN to unlock the door. It is the best door lock because they are very easy to install and maintain, and you can assign different codes to different users. You can change PIN at any time, allowing you to easily manage access to your building.
Some models have protective mechanisms such as keypads that shut down after an incorrect code has been entered three times. Most newer models have a touch screen, but some have physical buttons. There are also combination keypad locks, which use a PIN in conjunction with another type of lock, such as deadbolts or handles.

Keyless/wireless smart locks
Keyless and wireless smart locks are some of the most and best digital door lock options. They allow you to connect to your locks over a Wi-Fi connection, so you can control your digital door lock from anywhere in the world via a mobile app or remote. However, unless you purchase your digital lock as part of a smart home package, they may not come with a dedicated mobile app.
Many digital door locks offer Bluetooth capability, which can automatically unlock your doors once you get within a certain distance. You may also be able to use your phone or a key card and tap the sensor to unlock the door.

Key cards/ Smart card locks
Key cards are a way to unlock your Bluetooth or radio frequency identification (RFID)-enabled smart lock. You simply tap the card against the lock sensor to unlock it. Key cards can be programmed to unlock multiple door locks, so, for example, your one key card can let you into the front, side and office doors in your building.

Fingerprint/Biometric door locks
Fingerprint/ biometric door locks are a popular and upcoming digital smart door lock option. You can unlock a door by having your fingerprint or (less commonly) your eye scanned. This is a very secure option, since fingerprints are all unique and are very difficult to copy. It's also a convenient option for individuals who don't have to carry a key card with them, which means they always have access.
Fingerprint door locks work by scanning a fingerprint and converting it into a numerical template, which then tells the system to unlock the door. Because this system is so dependent on connectivity, thus look for a model with a backup option like a keypad or mechanical lock so you can still gain entry if your fingerprint cannot be scanned.
Many models have a limit of 100 fingerprints that can be stored, so if your company is larger, a biometric lock may not be the best option for you.
